About the position
The City of Columbus is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual for the position of Assistant Director within the Department of Public Utilities. This full-time, unclassified role is pivotal in overseeing the administrative and operational functions related to the Customer Service Center, Revenue Reception, and the Billing and Permits sections. The Assistant Director will work under administrative direction, taking on significant responsibilities that include developing and coordinating special programs and projects, establishing key performance indicators, monitoring vendor contracts, and formulating annual strategies, goals, and objectives for the department.

Additionally, the role involves preparing comprehensive and technical reports, documents, and correspondence that are essential for the department's operations. In this capacity, the Assistant Director will serve as a key advisor to the Director, providing insights and recommendations on all activities and functions related to customer service. The position also requires representing the Director or the department at various meetings with other government agencies, community and neighborhood groups, and the public. The Assistant Director will play a crucial role in ensuring that the department's goals and objectives are met while maintaining effective communication with the Director regarding any situations that may impact departmental performance. This position is classified as unclassified, meaning that the individual will serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated from employment at any time, as per the Columbus City Charter, Section 148(1).
Responsibilities
- Oversee the administrative and operational functions related to the Customer Service Center, Revenue Reception, and Billing and Permits sections.
- Develop and coordinate special programs and projects initiated by the department, such as the Small Business Concierge.
- Monitor vendor contracts and develop key performance indicators for departmental functions.
- Prepare comprehensive and technical reports, documents, and correspondence for the department.
- Serve as an advisor to the Director on activities and functions related to the department.
- Represent the Director or the department at meetings with constituencies, civic associations, business and special interest groups, community and neighborhood groups, or the public.
- Keep the Director informed of all situations that could affect the accomplishment of departmental goals and objectives.
Requirements
- Senior level experience in administrative or operational functions within a public utility or similar environment.
- Strong leadership and management skills to oversee departmental functions and staff.
- Excellent communication skills for effective representation of the department at meetings and in reports.
- Ability to develop and implement policies, rules, and regulations related to departmental operations.
- Experience in project management and coordination of special programs.
