The ideal candidate will perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction, maintenance, and repair tasks involving city infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, water/sewer systems, parks, and other municipal assets. This position requires the safe and effective operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, skid steers, loaders, dump trucks, and tractors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform construction, maintenance, and repair work on city infrastructure including roads, sidewalks, storm drains, water lines, sewer systems, and public grounds.
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment and machinery such as backhoes, skid steers, front-end loaders, dump trucks, and tractors in a safe and effective manner.
  • Assist with excavation, grading, paving, compacting, and material transport.
  • Conduct routine inspections and minor repairs on equipment and tools to ensure operational readiness.
  • Install and repair signage, fencing, and barricades as needed.
  • Perform manual labor including digging, lifting, carrying, and loading materials.
  • Respond to public works emergencies including weather events, water main breaks, and other urgent infrastructure needs.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulatory compliance standards at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
  • May assist other departments as needed during emergencies or special events.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in construction, maintenance, or a similar labor-intensive field.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid [State] Driver’s License required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of public works maintenance procedures, construction practices, and safety regulations.
  • Skill in operating heavy equipment and power tools effectively and safely.
